THE P-51 MUSTANG

Aviation and history enthusiasts are probably well aware of the P-51 Mustang, known as one of the most famous fighter planes from World War II. In this article we’ll discuss the history of this incredible aircraft including what makes it so special, and share where you can see one today. For any questions please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center

History of the P-51 Mustang

In the late 1930’s when war was looking increasingly likely in Europe, the British Royal Air Force needed to enhance the strength of its fighter fleet. Looking to North American Aviation to develop something groundbreaking. On October 26, 1940, infamous test pilot Vance Breese flew the first P-51 prototype and reached an incredible speed of 382 miles per hour, which outperformed the Spitfire. And on that day the P-51 Mustang was born.

How Many Exist Today?

During WWII approximately 15,000 P-51 Mustangs were produced. Today, however, there are around 150 airworthy aircraft remaining, and they’re located around the world either in museums, flying, or are being restored. Because the P-51 Mustang is considered such a crucial piece of flight history, many of the surviving aircraft are on display in museums or via private collectors. They are incredibly valuable and a very special piece of American history. If you’re ever presented with the chance to see one in person, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity!

What Makes the P-51 Mustang So Special?

  • The aircraft achieved speeds of over 400 miles per hour, much faster than any existing aircraft at that time.
  • Its low-cost, long-range, and high speeds made it the ideal aircraft to escort bombers in and out of Germany, while also wrestling with German fighters who attempted to attack the bombers.
  • It could carry 1,000 pounds of cargo, enabling it to also act as a fighter.

Where to find a P-51 Mustang today

As mentioned above, there are around 150 surviving P-51 Mustang aircraft around the world today. Some are on display in aviation museums in countries including Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, The Philippines, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Privately owned P-51 Mustangs are sometimes featured at local and national airshows, giving audiences a rare chance to see one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history, and to see one in flight is truly a memory to be treasured.

For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today. We look forward to hearing from you.

PILOTS OF ALL AGES

Many people discover new hobbies, interests, and passions later in life. The idea that trying new things is only for younger people is so beyond the truth. If you’re well into or entering your golden years, now is an excellent time to pursue your dreams! If you’ve always dreamed of becoming a pilot you’re probably wondering, can you become a pilot at any age? The answer is absolutely yes, however certain types of pilot licenses do have age restrictions. Our team at Monmouth Jet Center explains:

What Age Can Someone Learn To Fly?

For young people interested in learning how to fly, there is no age requirement to take flying lessons with an instructor. However you can’t fly solo (without an instructor) until 16 years old. These solo flights usually consist of pattern work and must be approved by your instructor prior to your flight. Once you are 17 and have the required hours of flight time and ground work, you can apply to take your check ride to get your private pilot’s license. At our flight school in NJ, we welcome many teenagers who are ready to pursue their dream of becoming a pilot. We love to see young people chasing their passions!

For those who are at retirement age and looking to take up new hobbies, it’s not too late to become a pilot. It’s important to note that commercial airlines require pilots to retire when they are between 60 and 65 years old. Depending on your age you might not be able to ever work for an airline, but there is no age limit on a private pilot’s license. Don’t let your age deter you from following your dream.

Never too Late to Learn to Fly

Older adults who want to learn how to fly are advised to be fit and healthy before enrolling in flight school. You must pass a medical exam to get your pilot’s license and it’s not a one-time thing. Pilots under the age of 40 must pass the medical exam every 60 months, while pilots aged 40 and older must pass it every 24 months. The medical exam consists of:

  • A physical exam
  • An eyesight exam
  • A hearing test
  • A lung function test
  • Routine blood tests
  • A blood pressure check
  • A resting EKG

While it may seem daunting, the medical exam is necessary to ensure you’re fit to fly, and many older adults pass it every 24 months with flying colors (pun intended).

Pilots Older In Age

Harry Moyer served as a pilot in World War II, and in 2020 at the incredible age of 100 years old, he became a contender for oldest active pilot in the world. In an interview from October 2020, Harry said he still flies every week and he shows no signs of slowing down.

In 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 lost all engine power after striking a flock of birds. One of the pilots, Sully Sullenberger, landed the plane in the Hudson River and miraculously there were no fatalities. Sully was 57 years old at the time, proving that older pilots are more than capable of acting in an emergency.

If you’re ready to enroll in flight school and work towards your dream of becoming a pilot, or if you would like more information, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today. It’s absolutely possible to become a pilot at any age, and we look forward to hearing from you.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FLIGHT TRAINING

Enrolling in flight training is a big dream that many people have. Maybe you’re interested in pursuing a career as a pilot, or perhaps you want to take up flying as a hobby. Whatever the reason, flight training is an essential step for anyone who wants to learn how to fly, and it’s important to understand what you’re signing up for when you enroll in flight school. Our team at Monmouth Jet Center in NJ is here to let you know what you can expect.

Ground School

Ground school is one of the first steps you’ll take when you sign up for flight training. As the name indicates, you’ll remain on the ground for this phase of flight school, and you’ll study aviation-related topics including airport rules, FAA regulations, weather patterns, aircraft controls, aerodynamics, and more. Ground school prepares you for the written exams you’ll need to take to get your pilot’s license.

How Long is Flight Training?

Flight training for a private pilot’s license requires 40 hours of flight time. This can take anywhere from six months to three years depending on how frequently you can fly and how much money you can put towards your flight lessons. While the average time is more likely between one to two years.

The stages of flight training include:

  • Ground work
  • Student pilot training
  • Passing all medical exams
  • Final check ride test and certification

The length of your flight training will depend on which type of pilot’s license you want to get: student, private, commercial, or airline transport. Each level has its own set of requirements, however most people can expect to spend one to three years in flight training regardless of which license you pursue.

When Do You Get To Fly Solo?

Taking your first solo flight is a big deal and an important rite of passage for anyone enrolled in flight training. However, like anything that’s worth having, flying solo is something you have to earn. Before you can fly solo you must pass all of the written exams, log a specific number of in-flight hours with an instructor, prove you can deal with common malfunctions, and demonstrate that you can handle abnormal situations. Once your instructor gives you the go-ahead to fly solo, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Approximate Cost

Flying can be an expensive hobby, and the cost depends on which pilot’s license you want to earn. Here are some approximate costs:

  • Sport pilot: $5,000
  • Recreational pilot: $7,000
  • Private pilot: $10,000
  • Commercial pilot: $30,000

If you’re interested in taking a few flying lessons without commiting to an entire flight training program, there are many flight schools that allow you to take several lessons to see if it’s something you’d be interested in pursuing further. It’s a great way to discover if you’re ready to turn your dream of flying into a reality.

Whether you’re ready to enroll in flight training or you’re still thinking it over, our team at Monmouth Jet Center is here to answer any questions and provide you with more information. Please feel free to contact us today, we look forward to teaching you how to fly.

CHARTERING A PRIVATE JET FOR THE FIRST TIME

Chartering a private jet for the first time is very exciting! We’ve all dealt with flying commercial and the many hassles that it entails – needing to be there at least two hours early, struggling to find a parking space, standing in endless security lines, and of course the inevitable flight delays and cancellations that can really interfere with your travel plans. When you charter a private jet you have the privilege of circumventing all of those inconveniences, and once you fly private, be warned that you’ll never want to go back to flying commercial again! Here are some important things to be aware of when chartering a private jet for the first time.

Locate The FBO

FBO is a fixed-base operator, which is a designated area within the airport specifically for private flights. While larger, commercial airports often have FBOs, you may find it easier and more convenient to fly via your local executive airport where there won’t be as much traffic. FBOs are usually located in a separate area of the airport, allowing you to bypass the long security lines.

When you charter a private jet you’ll receive an itinerary that tells you which FBO you’ll be departing from, as well as where to find it. If it’s your first time flying private it may seem a little confusing, so don’t hesitate to contact the airport if you have any questions. Your FBO might also have designated parking for you to take advantage of.

Remember Your Identification

Just because you skip the security lines when you charter a private jet doesn’t mean that none of the rules apply. Everyone who is boarding the aircraft must show valid identification, and for international flights a valid passport is required.

We recommend making a list of everything you need when packing for your private flight, and be sure to put your identification at the top of the list. You’d be surprised how often first-time private flyers forget to bring their ID! If you don’t have your ID, unfortunately you won’t be allowed to board the aircraft.

Pack Accordingly And Enjoy Your Flight!

While it’s true that you don’t have to check your bags when you charter a private jet, it doesn’t mean that you can turn up with three oversized suitcases packed to the brim. Private jets often have less space than commercial planes, so it’s best to ask the person you’re chartering your jet from about luggage limitations. While you can bring liquids onboard a private flight, you won’t be allowed to bring universally-banned items including sharp objects, any flammable substances, firearms, or any other type of weapons.

For more information about chartering a private jet, or if you have any questions about the process, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today. We look forward to hearing from you.

BUYING OR SELLING AN AIRCRAFT?

If you’re in the market to buy or sell an aircraft, have you considered working with an aircraft broker? An aircraft is a huge investment and aircraft brokers know the ins and outs of the industry, and they can often get you the best deal. Even the most seasoned aviation enthusiasts can sometimes use a little extra help.

Working With An Aircraft Broker

A private aircraft broker is a company or a person who facilitates the buying or selling of a private aircraft. If you’re looking to buy or sell an aircraft, hiring a broker means that they’ll be with you every step of the process, from the initial discussions until the final paperwork is signed and ownership is transferred.

Brokers are beneficial because they know the market, they can help you avoid conflicts of interest, they can find any potential savings, they know the main pitfalls to look out for, and they can give you valuable insider advice. Aircraft brokers also take away much of the stress associated with buying or selling aircraft because they handle every step of the process themselves, while still keeping you involved and informed.

Co-Own Your Aircraft

It goes without saying that buying an aircraft is a huge investment. During a time when inflation is high and the cost of living is steadily rising, co-ownership is a great option. Aircraft partnerships are when two or more parties jointly own a private aircraft, and they split the cost of purchase, storage, fuel, maintenance, repairs, and other associated costs.

Unless you’re using your aircraft every day, co-ownership is an excellent option that saves you a lot of money. You and your co-owners can work out a schedule for who gets to use the aircraft at certain times, and you’ll still enjoy all the benefits of the aircraft as if you were the sole owner.

Expenses To Consider

It’s no secret that owning an aircraft is a huge expense. Maintenance, repairs, fuel, and storage are just a few of the costs you need to consider before you buy an aircraft. Other expenses you may not have considered include:

  • Insurance: There are various types of aircraft insurance, including passenger insurance for anyone who accompanies you on a flight.
  • Crew salaries: Private jets often require flight crews, who need to be paid for their services.
  • Cleaning: Your aircraft will need to be regularly cleaned, both the interior and exterior, to keep it in great condition.
  • Hangars in other cities: If you’re flying your jet to a different destination, you’ll need a place to store it when you land. Your home base hangar isn’t the only storage space that you’ll be paying for.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling an aircraft and you’d like to learn more about working with an aircraft broker, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today. We look forward to hearing from you.
