How to safely store your personal jet or airplane

Properly storing your aircraft is part of being a responsible owner – and this means evaluating your options to find out what works best for you. Monmouth Executive Airport takes a look at the pros and cons of different storage options.

Tie-down or hangar?

The most common tie-down is a three-point tie-down that involves securely fastening your aircraft at each of the wings and the tail to attachments placed in a dedicated aircraft parking lot. This option is the most affordable option in terms of upfront costs and it is effective at ensuring that your airplane won’t tip in strong winds. However, your aircraft will be at the mercy of the elements, including sun, snow and winds, which can lead to significant increases in maintenance costs that can quickly outweigh the apparent affordability of this option.
Hangar space for rental or purchase is the more expensive option, but it does keep your aircraft safely out of the elements. Generally speaking, there are two main types of hangars – T-hangars and shared hangars. Shared hangars are communal and therefore more affordable, but airplanes can suffer from bumps and minor accidents caused by other airplanes moving in and out of the space if not managed properly. T-hangars are t-shaped with a narrow back end to fit the tail and a wider front to fit the wings. These are not shared hangars and allow aircraft owners the luxury of having their own space in which to store their aircraft, work on it and even have their own office space.

Don’t let bad weather add to your travel frustrations

With winter comes rain, snow, sleet… and travel nightmares. With frustration over delayed and cancelled flights increasing over this season, it’s no surprise that business and leisure travellers are turning to private aircraft companies to help them get to where they need to be. But how do private airports like Monmouth Jet Center manage to offer a solution when large national and international airports and carriers can’t?
  • More airport options: There are far more private airports than commercial options, as they don’t require the same infrastructure and support. This means that private airplane companies can be more flexible with their flight plans, flying around bad weather and avoiding areas where the weather has made the airport inaccessible.
  • Quick turnaround times: Commercial airliners can easily get grounded by bad weather, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded for days or even weeks. Smaller private jets have a much faster turnaround time, allowing them to start using runways safely as soon as the weather allows. This makes all the difference when you need to get the first available flight out to your destination.
  • Manageable infrastructure: Private aircraft are able to use much smaller runways than their commercial counterparts. These runways can be cleared quickly in the event of a window in the weather, allowing you to get up in the air as soon as possible.
  • Reduced traffic: Flight backlogs can leave you stranded even after the weather has cleared – but not at private airports where there is less traffic and a fast turnaround time on private flights.
  • De-icing services: The cost of de-icing a private jet – as well as any delays – is carried by the charter company, ensuring that your ticket stays on budget regardless of the weather.

Rent, buy or custom-build your aircraft hangar in New Jersey

Aircraft hangar space is in demand all along the East Coast and especially in the New Jersey Tri-State area. Private airports, such as Monmouth Executive Airport, have recently expanded their development, offering you the chance to rent, buy or custom-build your own aircraft hangar. So what’s the best choice for you?
  • Renting aircraft hangar space: The main benefit of this option is that it is available immediately and you can move your airplanes in as soon as possible. Renting also gives you flexibility in case you decide to change the size or location of your hangar in the future.
  • Buying a hangar: Purchasing your own hangar might be a larger once-off investment, but it does come with a few silver linings. Firstly, they appreciate in value due to the high demand and limited supply of hangar space. You can also use your hangar to provide additional rental income if you have space you aren’t using. Your hangar may also qualify as a 1031 tax-deferred exchange property and can be depreciated for tax purposes if you rent it out.
  • Custom-building your own hangar: In addition to the abovementioned benefits, you can also choose to have your hangar custom-built. This does mean you would have to wait and rent hangar space while construction is under way, but the result would be a hangar designed exactly according to your particular needs.

Four traits of top private jet pilots

The life of a private pilot is an exciting and demanding one – and, although each person is unique, the best pilots often have specific character traits which help them succeed in this challenging career path. This is often referred to as “The Pilot Personality.”
  1. Confident – but calm: Pilots are well known for keeping their emotions out of the cockpit, ensuring they are able to stay calm and in control as they fly. It’s not just about hearing that reassuring tone over the intercom, it’s also about being able to properly evaluate a situation and deal with it effectively, keeping passengers and crew safe.
  2. Detail-orientated: Pilots are trained to take in hundreds of small details, evaluate them and implement a solution all within an environment that is constantly changing. Their job is to consider every possible negative outcome and worst-case scenario, and then ensure none of them happen.
  3. Optimistic: All the top pilots share a passion for flight and with this comes a real sense of optimism. While their aim is to deliver you safely and on time to your destination, they also want to share their joy of flying. There aren’t many people as enthusiastic as pilots when it comes to sharing their profession – from showing you around their aircraft and answering questions to ensuring you have an enjoyable flight.
  4. Physical and mental fitness: For a job that requires a lot of sitting, being a great pilot involves constant monitoring of your physical and mental health. Fitness in both areas helps pilots to function at the height of their abilities, enhancing decision-making, positive energy and flight safety.

How to book a private jet

Charter jet rental has become increasingly popular over the last few years for corporate as well as leisure travellers. More affordable than first class tickets, more comfortable than commercial flights and more convenient for passengers who want to avoid traffic, schedules and queues, charter flights offer significant benefits over their commercial counterparts. Here are some great tips for ensuring your private jet experience is as enjoyable as possible.
1. Choose the right aircraft: There is a wide range of aircraft for hire in the charter industry and knowing which plane will suit your needs is essential to a comfortable flight. In addition to smaller jets which seat up to seven passengers, there are mid and large size jets ideal for carrying larger parties and going longer distances without refueling – saving you valuable time. Your destination and the number of guests you will be flying with are the most important factors, but be sure to remember other requirements such as particular seating arrangements, privacy and storage as well.

2. Use a broker: Brokers work with charter companies to negotiate the best deal on your behalf, balancing luxury with affordability. They can assist you with choosing a reputable company and selecting the correct aircraft for your trip, as well as ensuring your travel arrangements run smoothly.

3. Be flexible: Although it’s not always possible (and one of the benefits of private travel is their ability to fit to your schedule and not the other way around), it is a good idea to be flexible with your travel times. Flying with short notice on empty leg flights can save you thousands of dollars without sacrificing any of the comforts that come with private travel.

4. Be specific: If you are travelling with children, have pets or have special needs (including mobility requirements) be sure to inform your broker or charter flight service as to exactly what you require. This will ensure the crew is fully informed of your needs and ready to deliver all the assistance you require with the utmost professionalism and friendly service.

5. Know your airport: Charter services are able to utilize smaller, private airports which allow them to deliver quick turnaround times and bypass the hustle and traffic of large airports. These airports are designed with private travellers in mind, offering high-class amenities as well as executive travel and parking services.
