NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR PREHEATING YOUR AIRCRAFT ENGINE

During these cold winter months it’s important that you properly preheat your aircraft engine before taking flight. Much like you preheat your car on a freezing morning, you should also preheat your aircraft engine because when you start an aircraft engine cold, the pistons are forced to work overtime and it causes excess wear and tear on your engine.

While standard heating methods like block heaters, dipstick heaters, and hot air blowers are tried and true methods of preheating your aircraft engine, new technologies have been developed that are more convenient and efficient. Let’s explore several of these heating methods.

The Standard Methods

Block heater

A block heater is a small heater that is embedded into the engine itself, so it will need to be installed. A cord runs from the block heater to an electrical outlet, allowing your engine to warm up thoroughly before you use your aircraft. How long you’ll need to keep it plugged in before using your aircraft depends on the size of your engine, it can be anywhere from two to six hours.

Dipstick heater

A dipstick heater replaces your regular oil engine dipstick, and it heats the oil in your engine directly. These heaters need to be installed professionally, and are more commonly used in smaller aircraft engines. Dipstick heaters also need to be plugged in so they can warm the oil in your engine, so you’ll need access to a nearby electrical outlet.

Hot air blower

Hot air blowers, generally powered by propane, diesel, or gas, are commonly found at many executive airports. These heaters are set up on a cart that easily moves from aircraft to aircraft, and a large, cylindrical vent runs from the heater into your aircraft to warm it.

New Technology: Cellular Access To Control Your Heater

The aircraft industry is always interested in easier, more convenient, and more efficient ways to preheat aircraft engines. One impressive new product called Switchbox allows you to turn on your preheater using your iPhone or iPad, so you don’t have to venture out into the chilly night to preheat your aircraft engine.

With Switchbox there’s no risk of leaving your heater running too long if you decide not to fly, or forgetting to turn it off, because you can set custom timers to switch off your heater at the time of your choice. You can also simply send a text message to turn off your heater, and you’ll get a reply text to confirm the heater has been turned off.

With remote heating options like Switchbox, you don’t have to trudge to the airport the night before to plug in your engine heater, you don’t have to worry about finding airport staff to preheat your engine if you can’t do it yourself, and you don’t have to worry about forgetting to switch it off. It’s convenient, efficient, and ensures your aircraft is ready to fly.

For more information about the new technology for preheating your aircraft engine, or if you have any questions, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today. We look forward to hearing from you.

FEATURES YOU CAN ADD TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR AIRCRAFT HANGAR

Are you redesigning your airplane hangar? Perhaps you’re making a list of your must-have features, or maybe you’re wondering what practical things you should include. Your airplane hangar is much more than a storage space, so why not transform it into a cool, fun place for you and your friends to hang out? Or maybe into an office space where you can work? Here are our must-have airplane hangar features

A Kitchen Area

At a minimum, you should install a tea and coffee station so you and your guests can enjoy some hot drinks while in your hangar. However, we recommend building a kitchenette area equipped with all the necessities for quick meals and snacks. If you have space outside of your hangar, you can install a BBQ grill and host cookouts during the summer months.

An Office For Admin

No one likes stacks of messy paperwork just lying around. Plus, when you’re not organized, it’s easier to lose or misplace important documents. Whether you plan to work from your hangar part-time, or you simply want a space to keep all your documents in order, a small office space is a great way to keep your hangar neat and tidy.

Big Windows

This isn't always allowed based on your hangar lease, but if it is an option for you we highly recommend installing some windows for natural light. You don’t want to feel like you’re enclosed in an underground bunker when you’re in your airplane hangar. Natural light is a great addition to any space, so we recommend installing big windows in your hangar, including several overhead skylights, so your space will be bright and feel airy. If you can't install windows we suggest some adding some artificial lighting, with “natural light” bulbs.

A Lounge Area

When flying with family and friends, it’s great to have a lounge area in your hangar where everyone can hang out. Think about your living room at home – it’s probably the room in your house where you spend the most time, and it’s practical and comfortable. Lounge essentials include several sofas, a few coffee tables, some board games and a few decks of cards, and maybe a flatscreen TV. A good WiFi signal is always appreciated, too!

As you can see, your aircraft hangar has the potential to be so much more than simply a storage space, especially if you’re a frequent flyer. Whether you’re a pilot and you plan to work out of your hangar, or you’re an aircraft hobbyist and you fly a lot with your family and friends, your custom airplane hangar is a place where everyone can come together and spend quality time.

For more information about custom airplane hangar space, or if you have any questions, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today. We look forward to hearing from you.

PREPPING YOUR AIRCRAFT AND HANGAR FOR WINTER

If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to prep your aircraft and your hangar for the cold winter months. In New Jersey, we know that in the coming months we’ll probably experience freezing or below-freezing temperatures, so ensuring your aircraft and your hangar are prepped is critical. Preparing for winter is way more involved than preparing for summer, so our team at Monmouth Jet Center has put together this helpful list to help you get winter-ready.

Oil and De-icer For Your Aircraft

You should be using lower viscosity oil in your engine during the winter months because it circulates better, especially when the engine is cold. Lower viscosity oil is beneficial for pressure and circulation, and if you’re unsure about which oil to use in your aircraft’s engine, ask the maintenance crew who services your aircraft.

De-icer fluid is another winter essential. It removes frozen contaminants like snow and ice from the exterior of your aircraft, which can interfere with a safe take-off if not removed on a regular basis. De-icer is usually applied using a large spray nozzle at a very high pressure, operated by a line service technician.

Preheat Your Aircraft Engine

Have you ever tried to start your car on a freezing winter morning, and found that the engine struggled to start? Aircraft engines can have difficulty starting in the winter, just like car engines. A temperature-controlled hangar can help keep the engine warm when your aircraft isn’t in use, and many aircraft have an electric plug you can use to heat the engine oil. If you know you’ll be using your aircraft, call ahead and have the hangar crew preheat your engine for an easy start.

Insulating & Heating Your Hangar

Your aircraft is probably in its hangar most of the time, so it’s essential to keep the hangar at an above-freezing temperature. But heating a big space like a hangar can be expensive, especially when the heat is running constantly. Instead of heating the entire space you can invest in things like under-floor heating and insulation to keep the temperature up.

Winter Accessories for Your Aircraft

  • Wing covers: These will help protect the aircraft’s wings and prevent ice build-up when your aircraft isn’t in use or in a hangar.
  • A full aircraft cover: If you want to protect your entire aircraft, you can keep it covered while it’s in its hangar. This helps protect the aircraft and prevents the engine from getting too cold.
  • A carbon monoxide detector:  It is required to install a carbon monoxide detector both in your aircraft and inside your hangar, especially if you’re using any type of heating method. Exposure to carbon monoxide can become deadly in a matter of minutes, so protect yourself.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AIRCRAFT INSURANCE

Do you have your own aircraft, or are you thinking of buying an aircraft in the near future? Owning an aircraft is a big investment, and similar to other big investments like cars and homes, you’ll need insurance. Aircraft insurance is essential to protect against damage, as well as normal wear and tear. In this article, we’ll discuss the basics of aircraft insurance, including different types of coverage, the cost and why it’s really a non-negotiable when owning an aircraft.

What Type Of Coverage Would You Need?

  • Owners Aircraft Insurance: this covers a range of different aircraft including  airplanes, seaplanes, and air gliders. This insurance covers the physical aircraft itself.
  • In-flight Insurance: As the name suggests, in-flight insurance covers any incidents that happen while you’re airborne, including incidents that occur during grounded operations.
  • Hangar Insurance. Most people store their aircraft in hangars, so in order to protect the hangar where you keep your aircraft, you’ll need hangar insurance. This also covers maintenance personnel if they service the aircraft in your hangar.
  • Renter Insurance: If you’re renting an aircraft instead of purchasing one, renter’s insurance is essential to protect yourself in case there’s an incident while the aircraft is in your possession. Additionally, if you are renting out the aircraft you own, it is essential for all renters to have their own rental insurance.

Cost of Aircraft Insurance

When budgeting for the cost of owning an aircraft and all related expenses, it’s important to remember that aircraft insurance will be a significant percentage of your budget. The cost will depend on several factors: what type of aircraft you have, the extent of the coverage, and your previous – if any – history with aircraft insurance.

We recommend speaking with an aircraft insurance company who can discuss your options and help you find an insurance policy that works for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all figure for cost when it comes to something as diverse as aircraft insurance, so you’ll need a customized policy.

Is It A Mandate To Have Aircraft Insurance?

Although there are no federal mandates that require you to have aircraft insurance, (FBOs) usually require you to be insured in order to use their facilities. For example, if you want to rent hangar space at Monmouth Jet Center, there are certain insurance requirements you’ll be required to meet before you’re eligible to rent a hangar with us.

Why Aircraft Insurance Is Important

Aircraft insurance protects you and your aircraft while in flight, while stored in a hangar, and during ground transportation. Insurance also covers the crew who service your aircraft, your passengers, in-flight crews, and incidents that occur internationally.

As mentioned above, aircraft insurance is a way to protect your investment. If an incident occurs while you’re uninsured, it can result in huge costs and inconveniences for you – so it’s absolutely not a risk worth taking.

For more information about selecting the right type of aircraft insurance for you, or if you have any questions, please contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today or visit our website at: https://monmouthjetcenter.com/

P41 FIGHTER – THE GREATEST PLANE THAT NEVER FLEW

Have you ever heard of the P41 Fighter? Even if you’re an aviation enthusiast, a WWII Aircraft buff, or just a history lover, you may not have heard about this important piece of American history. That’s because it never really made it into production, but it was built and flown, and paved the way for other important aviation developments in WWII aircraft. In this article, our team delves into the history of the P41 Fighter including its importance in aviation history and aircraft engineering generally.

Development History of the P41 Fighter

The P41 Fighter was one of the last planes built by Seversky Aircraft in 1939 before their president and founder was ousted for mismanagement and the company became the Republic Aviation Corporation. The design of the P41 was more lethal and powerful than previous fighter aircraft used by the United States Air Force. Engineers added two extra feet onto its frame, which made it look sleeker and longer in contrast to its portly predecessors. In order to make it more streamlined, the exposed housing of the main landing gear legs were hidden, and the engine was replaced with a more powerful Pratt and Whitney engine model with a 2 speed supercharger that boasted a 1,200 horsepower output, enormous for its time.

In order to give the pilot better visibility, the P41 Fighter  used a new and streamlined greenhouse-style canopy, and a small tail wheel was attached to the underside of the aircraft for taxiing .Most notably, the P41 boasted top speeds of around 230mph, which was approximately 20mph faster than the fastest American fighter at the time, more on par with the faster and more agile aircraft from other countries.

First Flight of the P41 Fighter

The first and only prototype of the P41 was tested in March of 1939, just months before World War II officially began.  A maximum speed of 325 mph was reached in testing at altitudes of 15,000 feet. The plane had better taxiing handling though cockpit views were still somewhat obstructed, a common limitation of early monoplanes.

Impact of the P41

The P41 Fighter is still considered an important stepping stone in aviation history and design even though only one prototype ever flew. Despite the promising improvements, the Air Force preferred other more impressive designs. Still the XP-41 was built upon to produce the P-43, and ultimately the P-47, the fighter that really reached full production and helped the US to win the war.

While we can’t get you a ride on a P-41, charter services available through our airport can get you a ride most anywhere. For Information on aircraft charter servicesplease contact our team at Monmouth Jet Center today or visit our website at: https://monmouthjetcenter.com/

BENEFITS THAT COME WITH JOINING A FLYING CLUB

Many people dream of learning how to fly. The idea of soaring through the sky, being up in the clouds, and experiencing total freedom is something everyone should try at least once. However, learning to fly can be a very expensive hobby – especially if you’re not aware of offered incentives. If you’re looking for ways to make flying more affordable, why not consider joining a flying club? Our team has outlined the benefits below.

What Is A Flying Club?

A flying club is exactly what it sounds like – a club for flying enthusiasts whether you already have your pilot’s license or if you’re still learning how to fly. It’s expensive to be solely responsible for the cost of aircraft rental, fuel, and the instructor’s time. A flying club allows you to share the costs with a group of people, making it more accessible. Fees will vary depending on the flying club you’re joining, but you can typically expect to pay a membership fee, a monthly fee and usage fees. While this may sound like a lot of fees, they are all at a discounted rate and are much more cost effective than paying for your aircraft rental, fuel and instructor rate by yourself each time you fly.

Benefits Of Joining A Flying Club

  • You get to meet local people who share your passion for flying. Similar to meet-ups for other interests like photography, movies, hiking, or classic cars, joining a flying club connects you to people in your community who also love flying.
  • It’s more affordable. When you split the cost of aircraft rental, fuel, and the instructor, it’s much more affordable to be part of a flying club than to privately rent an aircraft.
  • You’ll meet study buddies if you decide to pursue your pilot’s license. Having a group of people who you can learn and study with in a supportive environment can make pursuing your pilot’s license a lot easier.

Meet People Who Share Your Hobby

If you want to learn how to fly, you’re probably also eager to discuss flying, flying lessons, and aviation in general with people who share your interests. And if you don’t have any family or friends who are interested in learning to fly, joining your local flying club is an excellent way to meet people who share your hobby. Whether you’re a beginner or you have some experience, everyone can come together at your flying club and enjoy their passion together.

Join The Flying Club At Monmouth

At Monmouth Jet Center, we’re proud to host a flying club that gives you access to six different aircraft. Our instructors are top-notch and we welcome people of all ages and experience levels. Plus, joining our flying club allows you to mitigate the expensive costs associated with learning how to fly. If you’re ready to discover what it’s like to be a pilot, our flying club is waiting in the wings for you.

PILOTS WHO TRAIN TO PERFORM AT AIRSHOWS

If you’ve ever attended an airshow then you’ve seen how impressive airshow pilot performers can be! They fly through the air at great speeds while performing dazzling acrobatic tricks and incredibly intricate maneuvers, much to the delight of the crowds on the ground. Watching airshow pilots is awe-inspiring and exciting, and you might be wondering how these extremely skilled pilots developed their abilities.

The Journey to Become an Airshow Pilot

The journey to become an airshow pilot is not an easy one. In addition to having a true love for flying, those interested in becoming an airshow pilot need to follow several steps:

  • Obtain a private pilot certificate. This includes logging a minimum of 40 hours in the air, and comes with several other requirements.
  • Obtain a commercial license. For this license you must log a minimum of 250 flight hours.
  • Go to aerobatic school. Here you’ll learn emergency maneuvers, basic aerobatics, high-performance aerobatics, and complex maneuvers. Aerobatic school comes at a steep price of around $8k and is only for those who are serious about pursuing their passion as an airshow pilot.
  • Pass the Aerobatic Competency Evaluation (ACE). This includes performing a choreographed routine, competing in amateur competitions, applying to fly in small-town airshows, getting sponsorship, and then entering larger airshows.

The Life of an Airshow Pilot

As you can imagine, the life of an airshow pilot is exciting, fun, action-packed, and often glamorous. However, performing in airshows only takes up a small percentage of a pilot’s time, and the rest of the time is usually spent traveling to the next airshow location, submitting applications to various airshows across the country, signing contracts, completing insurance paperwork, applying for the necessary permits, and of course, keeping their certifications and aircrafts up to date.

Pilots who want to perform in airshows must join the International Council of Airshows (ICAS), and all members are required to renew their membership every two years. So behind the flashy routines in the sky, a lot of work goes into being an airshow pilot.

How they create their performance routine

Airshow pilots are performers at heart, and they love putting on a show. First they select their music, and this is important because music sets the mood for the audience. Perhaps they want something fast and dramatic, or maybe they prefer something a little slower but with periodic faster moments throughout. A typical airshow lasts for a song or two.

Once the music has been chosen it’s time to choreograph the routine, and this is where pilots can let their personality show. Some pilots prefer aggressive and daring routines, dipping close to the ground at impressive speeds, while others opt for smoother, sophisticated routines, performing daring yet classic maneuvers above a breathless audience. No matter what kind of airshow you see, we guarantee you’ll be impressed.

PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT

Your aircraft is a valuable investment that deserves to be cared for and protected. When not in use, you likely store your aircraft in a hangar, and  for those who don’t have their own hangars, renting is the best option. Did you know you can request a hangar ahead of time to ensure your aircraft is secure and protected from the elements?

At Monmouth Jet Center we have short-term hangar rentals available for a range of different types of aircraft, and unlike large commercial airports, there’s no waiting list when you choose to request a hangar with us.

Request a Hangar

Planning a trip often involves a long to-do list, so be sure you add “request a hangar” to your list! Requesting a hangar with us is simple and straightforward, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. As soon as you know the dates you’ll be storing your aircraft, please give us a call so we can reserve a hangar for you and have it ready upon your arrival.

If you’ve ever tried to rent hangar space at a commercial airport then you know availability can be scarce and sometimes you have to add your name to a waiting list. Unless you plan a year in advance there’s no guarantee that a hangar will be available when you need it. At smaller, executive airports like Monmouth Jet Center, we have year-round availability and we’re conveniently located close to the Jersey Shore, and just an hour drive to New York City, and several other popular vacation destinations.

Keep Your Investment Safe

Storing your aircraft in a hangar is essential to keeping it in top condition. Hangars protect your aircraft from the elements. In the same way you wouldn’t leave an expensive car parked outside on the street overnight, you shouldn’t leave your aircraft exposed and unprotected. When you rent a hangar from us you can rest assured that your aircraft is safe while you enjoy your trip.

Short Term Hangars at Monmouth

Short-term hangar rentals at Monmouth Jet Center are flexible and suited to your needs. Whether you’re traveling for business and only need a hangar for a few days, or you and your family are taking a summer vacation to the Jersey Shore and you’re interested in renting a hangar for a week or two, we have options for you. Although we can usually always accommodate you upon short notice, we recommend you plan ahead if possible, so please give us a call when you know your travel dates so we can reserve a hangar for your aircraft.

HOW TO PREPARE AN AIRCRAFT FOR LONG TERM STORAGE

As most pilots would agree they want to fly as often as possible, however life sometimes has other plans. If you find yourself needing long term storage for your aircraft, there are a few things you should consider. If you don’t already keep your aircraft in a hangar when you’re not using it, you should consider renting a hanger as it will best protect your investment. Leaving an aircraft on an outside tie down long term, while not using it often is a recipe for additional maintenance costs.

Hanger Space is your Best Option

If you won’t be using your aircraft for the foreseeable future, hangar space is the best option to protect your plane from elements like moisture which can cause multiple hush cost problems, birds looking for refuge and even sun damage which can fade your paint job, and the interior of your aircraft. The rent you pay for a hangar could pale in comparison to the kinds of expensive repairs an inactive plan stuck outside may need in 6 months. Inside a hanger you will keep your aircraft safe and keep the maintenance bill as low as possible.

What to Consider When Looking for a Hangar

Generally you can look at a wider range of airport locations when shopping for the best deal on hangars for storage, because proximity isn’t as important as it would be for frequent fliers. Monmouth Airport actually houses a number of aircraft for NY based clientele who enjoy the lower hangar rents than NY area airports, but they can still get from the city to their jet in an hour by car, or 20 minutes by helicopter.

Additionally, hangar spaces come in different sizes, so it’s important to make sure you get something big enough to comfortably house your aircraft but also not so big that you are paying for wasted space.  All hangar spaces should offer electricity and water, if you need to vacuum, wash, or preheat and charge your aircraft battery. Some hangars at Monmouth Airport are also heated or come with a small flight office particularly helpful for small commercial operators.

Hangars at Monmouth Jet Center

Monmouth Jet Center has affordable hangars available where you will be paying a fraction of the price they charge at a busy airport like Teterboro. Additionally in most cases you don’t have to be on a waiting list for a hangar, they normally have them available immediately. Because you choose to store your aircraft at a smaller airport, you also enjoy lower fuel costs and a more relaxed class 2 airspace compared to the hectic airspace at a busy NY airport. Give our experts at Monmouth Jet Center a call today to answer any questions.
