CHOOSING TO BECOME AN AIRLINE PILOT AS A CAREER

Are you interested in pilot training? Many people find the idea of becoming an airline pilot an attractive career choice, but don’t know exactly what it involves or how to pursue it. Believe it or not, the technical process of learning to fly a plane and operate all of the controls is not the most difficult part of becoming a pilot. With dedication and commitment, you can learn how to operate an aircraft and master the controls. However, there’s much more involved when you’re put in charge of an aircraft, the passengers, and all of the cargo.

You may have heard the cliché that “airplanes fly themselves,” and with technological advancements it’s easy to understand why people say that. But pilots must possess the ability to make quick decisions in adverse conditions, they need to be able to act in the best interest of everyone on board, and they must be able to keep a calm demeanour when tense situations arise. As the pilot, you’re responsible for everyone and everything on board, and you’re also responsible for maintaining an atmosphere that is as relaxed as possible.

Educational requirements differ depending on the airline. A Bachelor’s degree is required to fly for large commercial airlines, while smaller regional airlines often require a two-year degree. We recommend pursuing an aviation-related Bachelor’s degree, so you have the option to one day pilot a commercial jet, plus obtaining a Bachelor’s degree will give you more flexible career options.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements

In order to become a licensed pilot you must meet the FAA requirements, and this includes getting an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. To obtain this certificate, you must pass an applicable knowledge test, a practical test, and meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 23 years old
  • Flown for at least 1,500 hours total
  • Flown for at least 50 hours in a multi-engine aircraft
  • Have a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating

Different options in learning how to fly in NJ

There are several routes to becoming a licensed pilot:

  • Aviation College. You’ll learn to fly while earning your four-year degree, and the training you’ll receive will be of the highest standard. You’ll also have access to the most advanced technology.
  • Part 141 or Part 61 Flight School. The numbers refer to FAA regulations, and each one has several differences
  • Aviation Academy. Similar to our flight school at Monmouth Executive Airport, you can gain the necessary experience while doing required coursework at an aviation academy.

If you’re ready to kickstart your aviation career and would like more information about Monmouth Executive Airport’s flight school, or if you have any questions, please contact our team today. Discover why so many people in New Jersey choose our pilot training program.

THE COST TO BUY, RENT OR BUILD A HANGAR EXPLAINED

If you’re in the market for hangar space, you may be wondering which option is best: buying, renting, or building an aircraft hangar. It’s essential that you keep your aircraft in a secure hangar to keep it safe from the elements and to keep it in the best condition possible. Depending on where you live, you probably have several choices, including buying or renting hangar space at a large commercial airport, or perhaps at a smaller executive airport.

There are different cost implications for each of these options. In this article, we’ll explain the average costs associated with renting, buying or building a custom aircraft hangar, as well as what you can expect in terms of aircraft maintenance. We highly recommend having a comprehensive understanding of all costs involved before making your choice.

How costs of airplane hangars can vary

The cost of your hangar will largely be determined by what type of aircraft you have. If you have a plane you use for personal recreation and short business trips, your best option is probably renting hangar space. Many public airports build a surplus of hangars and you will most likely be able to find one to rent at a reasonable rate, and renting allows you to be flexible with moving your aircraft base from one location to another if necessary.

Corporate aircrafts are more high-maintenance than personal aircrafts, meaning they must be protected from the elements while not in the air, and they must be ready to fly at any given time. A hangar for a corporate aircraft will be more expensive than a hangar for a personal aircraft. In addition, we recommend hangaring corporate planes somewhere that’s serviced by an on-site aircraft maintenance team

Every airport will have their own hangar rental and purchasing costs that are influenced by a variety of factors, including tax rates, population density, local regulations, and the specifics of your aircraft. Location and convenience also factor into prices.

Other factors to take in consideration

While building custom hangar space is an attractive option because you can build it to your exact specifications, remember that you’ll be responsible for additional costs including building maintenance, repairs, insurance, and utilities. Building your own space also gives you the option to build designated spaces for maintenance.

Renting is an appealing choice to most personal aircraft owners who use their planes for leisure and light business travel. However, before making a choice, find out what services are included in the rental price (like maintenance) and find out if the airport offers around-the-clock on-site aircraft support.

How rewarding is it to learn to fly?

Have you ever been curious about enrolling in a pilot training program? Many people dream about learning to fly, whether as a career choice or a hobby. At Monmouth Executive Airport, we run a premier flight school in NJ where you can pursue your passion, learn all about becoming a pilot, and experience the freedom of flying.

Taking flying lessons is incredibly rewarding, and we’re proud to say that we’ve worked with hundreds of people of all different ages and experience levels. Whether you’re brand new to the world of flying with no prior experience, or you’ve had some flying experience before, we welcome you to participate in our pilot training program. We also welcome you to take a Discovery flight with one of our certified instructors.

What to expect during a Discovery flight

Once you’re ready to learn to fly, your first point of call will be a Discovery flight. This is exactly what it sounds like – an introductory flight that allows you to discover what it’s like to operate an aircraft.

Here’s what you can expect during a typical Discovery flight:

  • While still on the ground, a certified flight instructor will walk you around the aircraft and familiarize you with all the components, both inside and out. You’ll get a tour of the cockpit including all major controls, and the instructor will be sure that you understand all functionalities before getting up in the air.
  • You’ll then learn how to check all the flight systems to ensure the aircraft is ready for take-off.
  • Now that the plane is ready for take-off, you’ll join the instructor in the aircraft for a short flight, usually around 45 minutes. While in the air, you’ll assist with monitoring fuel levels, engine oil, aircraft lights, and other essential components.
  • The flight instructor may also allow you to assist them with some gentle, easy maneuvers while you’re in the air.
  • Once you’re back on the ground, the pilot will show you how to examine the aircraft for any signs of damage.

Discovery flights are great for people who want to get a taste of what it’s like to be a pilot, and we recommend taking one before you sign up for pilot training.

WHAT FOOD CAN I HAVE ON A PRIVATE JET CHARTER?

Private jet charters are a preferred method of travel for many reasons, like convenience, flexibility, security, and privacy, just to name a few. If you’re planning to charter a private jet, you may also be wondering what range of food will be available on the plane. Especially, if it’s a long-haul flight during which you’ll be eating several meals.

Food options on private jet charters are plentiful:

  • Just like every other element of your flight, the food and drink on a private jet charter can be customized to your every need.
  • You have the option of creating your own menu or leaving it to the charter company. For busy international travelers, they often don’t have time to think about what food they want to eat during their flight. If you’re too busy to create your own menu, or if you’d rather leave it up to the charter company, you’re still guaranteed a range of fresh, delicious options while on board.
  • Nearly all food allergies and dietary requirements can be accommodated. From vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, keto, paleo, and more, a private jet charter can accommodate your dietary requirements. If you or any other passengers have any food allergies, we recommend providing the charter company with a list ahead of time to ensure they can comply.
  • Will you be celebrating in the sky? Perhaps a birthday or an anniversary? Let your charter company know of any special occasions so they can have some champagne ready for you when you board!
  • Most private jets also have a self-service area where you can help yourself to water, assorted teas and coffees, and other drinks. There are usually small snack bars too, for smaller bites and finger foods. If there are certain items you want stocked in the self-service bar, let the charter company know ahead of time so they can have it ready for you.

Executive airport amenities at Monmouth Jet Center

Many people prefer using smaller executive airports instead of larger commercial airports for private jet charters. The waiting list for hangar space at commercial airports is often very long, while smaller airports like Monmouth Executive Airport have custom hangar space ready for you to use today! Many executive airports also have on-site aircraft maintenance teams who ensure your aircraft is kept in top condition and ready to fly when you are.

To learn more about Monmouth Executive Airport, including questions about custom hangar space and aircraft maintenance, please contact our team today. Discover why so many people in New Jersey choose Monmouth Airport as their preferred executive airport.

WHAT IS CABOTAGE, AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT PRIVATE JET CHARTERS?

If you’re familiar with the aviation industry then you may have heard the word “cabotage” before, but what does it mean and how does it impact private jet charters? Cabotage comes from the French word “caboter”, which means to travel via the coast, and it was originally used in the maritime industry.

The term carries slightly different meanings depending on the industry, but in relation to the aviation industry, airline cabotage is when an airline carrier from one country operates flights that begin and end in a different country. For example, the airline Emirates operating flights that start in Los Angeles and end in New York City is airline cabotage, since Emirates is not an American company.

How does cabotage affect private jets?

Many people prefer flying via private jet charters because of the flexibility and convenience. There’s no standing around for hours in a terminal, no long security lines, and private jet charters can often use smaller executive airports to land closer to the final destination than larger, commercial flights. Once a private jet lands in a certain location, it sometimes becomes available for the next person to book it, similar to a taxi that has just dropped off a passenger.

If the private jet is owned and operated by an airline from another country, once the pilot completes their first trip they cannot pick up new passengers and start a new charter flight unless they qualify for the below exemptions. A flight operator can carry out a connecting domestic flight if:

  • The passenger list remains the same throughout the entire route
  • The number of passengers does not change
  • The passengers board the connecting flight the same day
  • The passengers remain in the airport during the connection

For example, if a private Emirates flight lands in New York City and is available for hire, and is then hired to pick up passengers in New York City and fly them to Tucson, the pilot can claim exemption from cabotage laws if they adhere to the above requirements.

Executive airports, custom hangar space, and more

Flying private has many perks, and so does using executive airports. Larger airports often have long wait lists for hangars and can sometimes be further away from your final destination. While smaller, executive airports like Monmouth Airport have custom hangar space available now, and are conveniently located near several popular destinations.

BUSINESS AVIATION TRENDS FOR 2021

The aviation industry went through a lot of ups and downs in 2020, and here at Monmouth Executive Airport we’ve been carefully watching the industry to understand what trends we’ll be seeing throughout 2021. Business travel via private jet is convenient, quick, and more affordable than it’s been in the past, so with that in mind, here are several business aviation trends we expect to see in 2021:

  • We’ll see more first-time business travelers using private jets.
After experiencing a year filled with travel disruptions, executives will want to take advantage of how convenient it is to travel via private jet, especially given their busy schedules. We also anticipate executives wanting to connect in person once it’s safe to do so.
  • An enhanced focus on hygiene and cleanliness. Hygiene has always been important to the aviation industry, especially when there are so many people in a small space. Given the fact that private jets allow business travelers to avoid crowded terminals and cramped airplane seating, we expect executives will prefer flying private for increased comfort and peace of mind.
  • Increased demand due to flexibility. The pandemic has proven that travel is one of the things people miss the most, and whether for business or leisure, private jets are more readily available and offer more options than commercial flights. Business travelers often have strict schedules and require a jet in last-minute situations, so we expect to see increased demand from executives.
  • An increased focus on client experience and retention. With a predicted increase in demand, companies will be going above and beyond to ensure private flyers have a seamless experience and keep coming back. Business travelers who require private jets with flexible schedules just might become regular clients in 2021.

Are you ready to learn to fly?

One thing we learned in 2020 is that we shouldn’t delay pursuing our interests and our passions. Many people are interested in taking flying lessons, but simply haven’t gotten around to it yet. If this sounds familiar, then now is the time to pursue your dream of getting up in the air! At Monmouth Executive Airport we have a world-class flight school for people of all ages and experience levels, and we love sharing the excitement that comes from soaring through the sky.
