INSIDE THE PROCESS: DE-ICING A PRIVATE JET

There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes technical services that ensure that private jets are able to fly safely, including de-icing services. Right now, while we’re in the grip of winter, Monmouth Airport – an exclusive private jetport – is taking a look at why these services are so important.

De-Icing Is a Legal Safety Requirement in Winter

If you’ve ever left your car outside overnight in winter, you’ll be familiar with the de-icing process. And, it’s a very similar process for private jets. In severe weather, multiple de-icings may be needed to ensure that the aircraft is free of snow and ice, and is safe to fly. Snow and ice on the wings will negatively affect the performance of the jet, and even a thin layer can reduce flight performance. In addition, private jet controls like the rudders, elevators, and ailerons can be blocked by snow and ice, which is very dangerous.
De-icing removes snow and ice from the aircraft and forms a protective layer that will prevent new ice from forming for a period of time.
The cost of this process is handled differently by each charter company. It is, therefore, a good idea to avoid early morning private jet flights if you are going to have to pay the bill, as this is when the jet is most likely to be covered in snow and ice. Here’s what happens:
  • De-icing fluid, anti-icing fluid or a combination of both is sprayed onto the jet.
  • This is done at the private airport by a custom de-icing rig using a hose that’s much like a firehose.
  • The fluid is applied at a high temperature and is colored orange, which helps ensure that no area of the jet is missed out.
  • It can be a pretty startling experience for clients, as they are usually on board for the de-icing process to ensure that the jet can take off immediately after. This prevents ice and snow from accumulating on the jet again.
Jets that are kept inside hangars don’t usually require de-icing. It is, however, frequently used for jets that are kept outdoors, as they are the most likely to get the full impact of winter weather, including heavy snows and storms.
